Manchester United’s harsh decision

Manchester United letting go of Ruben Amorim while being sixth in the Premier League is yet another milestone in a series of short-term measures that have been taken at Old Trafford over the past ten years. Whether this will actually turn out to be a real turning point or just another reset will totally depend on the next management the club will put in place and not just on the fact that one manager has gone.

What Actually Happened?

• Ruben Amorim has been discharged after only 14 months of managing, with United being at the sixth spot with just three points behind the Champions League places.

• The club’s announcement emphasized that the leadership “under protest” was of the opinion that it was the perfect time for a shift in order to provide the team with the best opportunity for the highest possible league finish.

• The media also reports of a rift with the management, bad press, and doubts over the coach's tact and skill as crucial factors in the decision.

Parallels With Chelsea

Chelsea has very recently ended the contract with Enzo Maresca even though the team was placed in the top half and he had already won the Club World Cup and European silverware for them.

In both scenarios, the official statement is quite alike: with the main goals still alive, a mid-season change is somehow presented as a way to "realign" the project and get the maximum short-term results.

This is showing the trend in the Premier League where the owners are more likely to demand instant corrections rather than wait it out with a manager, no matter how good and successful the manager is or where he comes from.

Will This Help Manchester United?

There are reasons to think this could be a positive step:

Performances and underlying numbers under Amorim have been unimpressive; points‑per‑game and goal difference have been worse than under the previous regime, even with heavy squad investment aimed at reshaping the team.

United still have a realistic path to Champions League qualification, so a new voice, clearer ideas and a refreshed dressing room could give a short-term boost.

If the interim structure (and then the permanent successor) is integrated into a coherent sporting vision, this change could be the moment when the club finally aligns recruitment, tactics and youth development.

But still there are serious risks:

United’s post‑Ferguson history reveals that making the manager change without addressing deeper structural issues recruitment, squad planning, and football leadership rarely affects the long-term trajectory.

Constant turnover has already resulted in a squad comprised of various coaches with differing ideas, complicating any new manager's task of imparting a consistent style.

Another short‑term appointment or a panic hire to satisfy fans and sponsors might leave United in the exact same position again in 18-24 months.

Next a Sacking in the Future

In order for this dismissal to be regarded as a good decision, there are three things that cannot be compromised:

Clarity of football identity: United should determine the playing style that they want to be associated with aggressive pressing, playing for ball possession, or quick transitions and then appoint a coach who matches that quality instead of hunting for big names.

Recruitment and structure in sync: A data-based, long-term transfer plan managed by a vigorous sporting department is crucial so that every player acquired suits both the coach and the multi-year plan.

Tolerance for the next venture: A top-notch coach would still need a minimum of 2-3 windows to finish the task of reshaping a discordant squad, thus merely basing the decision on the earliest results would only trap the club in the same cycle.

Once these conditions are fulfilled, the departure of Amorim could be highlighted as the point when Manchester United ushered in a new era by giving up on patching up the old ways and intends to build a modern football structure. On the contrary, it will be the case of the famous club again, mistaking turbulence of constant changes for the genuine progress.
