The GOAT Tour of India of the soccer superstar Lionel Messi, promised with great anticipation, took place today in Kolkata but what was supposed to be magical became a huge disappointment. The fans who paid excessively were expecting nothing less than a 30-minute lecture and then a little time on the field with the trio of the legends being Rodrigo De Paul, and Luis Suárez at Salt Lake Stadium instead, a hurried 10-15 minute stroll amid chaos of security was what they got.
The Hype vs. Harsh Reality
The reality was that the trio only appeared for a short while on the pitch, surrounded by a tight circle of security and public figures, and were, thus, hardly noticeable to the loudest part of the audience. Fans kept on pushing their way to get little peeks, taking blurry selfies of an empty field, while the big screens that were set up all over the venue were the ones mocking everybody's disappointment with their non-fulfillment of promises.
Fan Fury and Organizational Mess
With “GOAT Tour India” banners and crumpled tickets in their hands, the supporters expressed their anger via social media: “Is 10-min peek worth the premium paid?” was the question of one of the tweets. The event reeked of poor organization, no proper access, no speech, just a fleeting parade which seemed like a VIP photo-op gone wrong. For Indian football followers, this disappointment hurts more since Messi’s charisma was worth better delivering.
Lessons for Sports Events in India
This debacle has brought to light the major fixes, i.e. regular refreshment fan zones, clear and precise schedules, and close-to-no barriers for icons like Messi. The event organizers have to make a perfect balance between security and spectacle to not make the heroes disappear as tiny specs. Will the tour recover in the following cities? The fans remain waiting with skepticism.
