The Indian women's football team displayed determination during their AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026 match against Japan which resulted in an 11-0 defeat The Japanese team displayed their dominance through this match which showed that Indian football faces major difficulties when competing against Asian teams who are more powerful than Japan.
The Historic Clash
The Japanese team established control over the game from the first moment through their players who achieved hat tricks during their unending attack throughout the second half. After their narrow defeat to Vietnam the Blue Tigresses from India showed determination against Japan but failed to break through the defense which goalkeeper Elangbam Panthoi Chanu protected. Japan used their first match to annihilate Chinese Taipei through a 2-0 victory while maintaining 89.5 percent possession and 87 penalty box entries.
Why the Gap Persists
Indian women have achieved international recognition through their progress but face obstacles because of inadequate training facilities and insufficient coaching expertise. The development of men's football faces more severe challenges because grassroots soccer and professional leagues have failed to meet basic requirements for success against teams like Japan. Japan, world #8, invests heavily in youth academies and technical play, a blueprint India must adopt.
Path Forward
The AIFF should allocate funding to support women’s leagues and hire international coaches and establish U-17 academies which will help reduce existing gaps. The investment in Sunil Chhetri led to successful results which now requires expansion. The India women's team will play their next match against Chinese Taipei. A victory in that match will create positive momentum.
